at Mount Vernon on Tuesday, May 23, to Stacy Schiff for
her book, A Great Improvisation: Franklin, France, and
the Birth of America, published in 2005. The $50,000 prize
honors the most important new book about the founding

Franklin Pierce senior Stephen Lacey was recently presented
with a Fitzwater Medallion for his outstanding contributions
to public discourse and democracy. The award is named
for Marlin Fitzwater, former press secretary to presidents
Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush and an advisory board
member for the Fitzwater Center for Communications at
