Evergreen Alumnus Competes on “Last Comic
Standing”
2001 Evergreen alumnus and stand up comic Josh Blue is
competing in the NBC reality series Last Comic Standing
this summer. Blue was selected over hundreds of comics
nationwide to join 11 others living and laughing on the
cruise ship Queen Mary, where they will compete in various
comedy contests to determine the top six, then the public

for Literacy Advisory Board
President George W. Bush announced his intention to nominate
SMU’s Patricia G. Mathes, TI Endowed Chair in Reading
Research and Professor, to be a member of the National
Institute for Literacy Advisory Board. Mathes will continue
teaching and serving as the director of the Institute
for Reading Research in SMU’s School of Education

Biology and Chemistry Students Publish Articles
on Parkinson’s Disease
Two studies conducted by a team of nine biology and chemistry
students and Assistant Professor of Biology Shubhik DebBurman
found that yeasts are an effective way to learn more about
Parkinson’s, which could lead to the discovery of
new drugs to treat or cure a disease that afflicts 1.5
million. Their findings were published in the Journal

After months of preparation, Dr. Stephen R. Briggs officially
became Berry's eighth president July 1st. Dr. Briggs replaces
Dr. Scott Colley, who retired effective June 30. During
his eight years as president, Dr. Colley led Berry through
a period of great progress. Dr. Briggs looks forward to

High Schoolers Attend Television News Institute,
Learn About Broadcasting Newscasts
18 students who were on campus July 10-14 to learn about
television news from local journalists. The students attended
daily workshops about covering and writing news, interviewing,
operating television cameras, lighting, video editing
and news anchoring. The week culminated with students
producing, writing, editing and anchoring two half-hour

Arcadia Students Host Artwork Auction to Benefit
People of the Congo
Arcadia University student Louis Herbst hosted an art
show that will benefit the Democratic Republic of the
Congo (DRC). Letters from Fidel, based on Herbst's year-long
efforts with activists in the Congo, was recently on exhibit
and on hand for a silent auction. Proceeds funded election
education materials for the people of Goma in the DRC.
The exhibit features photographs by Congolese activist
