Rhodes requires a minimum of  16+ academic units completed in high school, including: 4 years of English, 2 years of the same foreign language, 2 years of laboratory science, 2 years of history or social science, a math course sequence that includes algebra I, geometry, and algebra II or their equivalents. 

Your application will be evaluated on Performance (high school grades and class rank) Potential (standardized test scores like SAT I or ACT); Personality (we’re not only looking for students who will do well at Rhodes, but those who will be happy here) and Participation (Extracurricular activities, leadership positions or summer experience). 

All applicants must submit an essay, a high school transcript, and 2 letters of recommendation. Interviews are strongly encouraged but not required. 

You are encouraged to visit Rhodes and get the real experience of the campus. Tour the campus, have an interview,  attend an information session, see the sights of Memphis, visit a class, talk with current students, meet a professor or two, eat in our Refectory (that’s what we call our Dining Hall), even spend the night in one of our residence halls. Come and really get to know this place and all that it has to offer!

Merit-Based Aid
Rhodes’ merit-based scholarship program is one of the largest per capita in the nation. 55% of entering students receive 4-year competitive scholarships / awards. In 2002-2003, Rhodes awarded entering students 249 merit-based scholarships valued at $2,305,168. Merit scholarships include: 

3 Bellingrath Scholarships- Full tuition, fees, room and board (by nomination only)
15 Rhodes Service Scholarships-$12,100 per year
8 Fine Arts Awards-$11,000 per year (in music, theatre, and art) 

Hundreds of Other Scholarships and Awards- $500 to full tuition and beyond: Morse, Cambridge, University, Ralph C. Hon, Presidential and Dean’s Scholarships, Rhodes Awards, Presbyterian Partnership, ROTC Program and more.

Need-Based Aid
Normally, our need-based financial aid packages contain three forms of assistance: Grants (helping to meet your financial need, college grants do not have to be repaid), Loans (programs to help students borrow money to pay for college), and Work Study (federally funded campus jobs where students may study as they work). 

Rhodes College Grants-in-Aid 2003-04 Rhodes range: $500 to $18,000; 2003-04 Rhodes average: $7,864.

Federal Pell Grant These federally funded grants are awarded to eligible students based on the expected family contribution from the FAFSA. Maximum: $4,050; 2003-04 Rhodes average: $2,667.

Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (SEOG) Federally funded grants to students with exceptional financial need. 2003-04 Rhodes average: 49 grants of $1,074 each annually.

Tennessee Student Assistance Award State awards range from $2,106 to $5,538 per year, depending on the expected family contribution. 2003-04 Rhodes average: $3,950.

Federal Perkins Loan This federal program, administered by Rhodes, enables students to borrow money to help finance their college expenses. 2003-04 average Perkins Loan: $1,663.

Federal Stafford Loan Stafford Loans, subsidized and unsubsidized, are available to qualified applicants through a federal program.

Parent Loans for Undergraduate Students (PLUS) PLUS allows parents to borrow the difference between cost at Rhodes and financial aid received each year.

Campus Job New students may earn up to $1,600 under the Federal College Work-Study Program by working an average of 10 hours a week during the college year.
