Washington & Jefferson College maintains a selective admission policy in order to attract the caliber of student necessary to fulfill the College’s purpose of graduating men and women of competence and maturity, prepared to contribute substantially to the world in which they live.
The College makes admission decisions based on the following criteria:
- Applicants should have a minimum of fifteen academic units distributed across different areas of study.
- Admission decisions are primarily based on academic performance and rank-in-class; followed by SAT I or ACT scores, letters of recommendation, and extracurricular activities.
- The Office of Admission also accepts the Common Application

Approximately 80% of students receive some kind of financial aid. The average annual financial aid award is roughly $16,000. To apply for need-based financial aid, students should complete the Free Application for Federal Financial Aid (FAFSA). W&J’s school code is 003389. The College offers substantial merit scholarships, ranging from $20,000 to $80,000 over four years. Awards are based primarily on the student’s academic record. There is no application to complete.
