• Evergreen’s unique academic assessment system actively involves students in the process of evaluating their academic work. Students receive a narrative evaluation from their professors and also engage in a rigorous process of self-evaluation. When graduation begins to draw near students work with their faculty advisor to create a self-evaluation that reflects critically upon their entire undergraduate experience and the extent to which they have achieved their learning goals. Employers and graduate schools find this approach beneficial because it is far more descriptive than traditional letter grades.

• Evergreen helps students pursue internship opportunities by offering weekly internship workshops through the advising department. After attending a workshop students gain access to the Internship Link, a searchable database of internship opportunities.

• Students can take advantage of an impressive selection of study abroad programs. Evergreen sponsors its own programs, collaborates with consortiums to offer other options and works with students to help them independently pursue a program that fits their needs and interests. In 2003, six Evergreen students studied abroad through the nationally competitive Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship program. Penn State was the only institution in the nation to place more students.

• Evergreen has a long standing commitment to supporting public service and public policy research. The college maintains a variety of institutes focusing on public policy, education, and Native American issues, which give students the opportunity to become involved in projects and research. These include the Evergreen Center for Educational Improvement, the Labor Education & Research Center, the Northwest Indian Applied Research Institute, the Washington Center for Improving the Quality of Undergraduate Education, and the Washington State Institute for Public Policy.

Try something new

• The Evergreen community rests on the foundation forged by the Evergreen Social Contract, which was written by founding faculty members. The contract obligates students to value freedom of thought and expression and to treat every member of the community in a civil manner.

• Students don’t even need to leave the campus to see big name newsmakers and popular bands. Michael Moore and Ralph Nadar have both appeared on the Evergreen campus and students regularly get to unwind to the sounds of groups like Colorado jam band, Leftover Salmon and Jules Graves.

• The residential life program emphasizes apartment style living. There are a variety of special housing options including alcohol, drug-free, and smoke-free housing, quiet living, housing for students with children, first-year experience and theme housing.

• Evergreen is a good place for the athletically inclined. In addition to varsity competition in men’s and women’s basketball, cross country, and soccer as well as women’s volleyball, students can take advantage of a wide range of club and intramural opportunities. Evergreen’s impressive facilities include a climbing gym.

• From student government and musical groups to juggling and cartooning, one of Evergreen’s more than 50 student organizations is sure to interest just about any student. There are a lot of community service opportunities at Evergreen, but there are also events and activities devoted simply to having a good time.
