Established in 1853, Mount Aloysius is a liberal arts and science-based institution with a commitment to career-directed study. Rooted in Catholic tradition, Mount Aloysius is one of the nation’s 16 Mercy sponsored colleges. MAC began as an Academy and has evolved into a comprehensive college which provides undergraduate and graduate education.

Discovering Success

  • Many student organizations use our Mercy heritage as a steppingstone to helping others. Students have traveled to Honduras to help build an orphanage and to Jamaica to volunteer at a school for deaf children. Along with faculty and staff, MAC students have annually gone Camp Coast Care in Mississippi to help rebuild the gulf coast after hurricane Katrina.

  • MAC student interns build practical experience in a wide range of professional settings. Some have served as clinical interns in a physical therapy practice, while others have been assistants to the Watershed Manager in the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection and in the IRS criminal investigations unit. For those that are more competitive, Mount Aloysius offers students the opportunity to compete for highly coveted internship positions. The College has had a pre-med student have a 10-week internship with the Pittsburgh Tissue Engineering Initiative at McGowan Institute for Regenerative medicine.

  • Students have collected food donations for regional food banks, involved themselves in Earth Day, UN Day of Peace, Walk for Life, Coaches vs. Cancer. The Mountie athletic teams have volunteered at a local soup kitchen, worked with Project Bundle Up to get winter coats for children in need, and have gone above and beyond at many different Salvation Army kettle locations during the holidays.

  • Mount Aloysius College continually researches employment trends and market demands, and adds or change programs to address emerging needs. Our entire curriculum reflects this focus on careers.

  • Our core curriculum helps you to become analytical and reflective. You also learn to approach your work within the context of the larger world and the human experience. Considerable emphasis is placed on writing. It’s a “classic” college curriculum, reinvented for today’s career-centric students.

  • Add an even higher level of intellectual inquiry with the MAC Honors Program. Through your four years, you interact with professors and other honors students to hone skills of critical thinking, persuasive writing and group leadership as you tackle the multifaceted issues of the human experience.

Academic Programs
More than 70 undergraduate academic programs and concentrations are offered on the undergraduate and graduate levels in Health Sciences and Nursing, Humanities, Education, Social Sciences, Natural and Applied Sciences, Business Administration, and Pre-Professional Study,

  • Forensic Accountant
    Think CSI:Accounting. This degree program, designed with input from the IRS Criminal Investigation Unit, integrates Accounting with Criminology. IRS agents come to campus to conduct mock criminal investigations with students.

  • Sign Language Interpreter
    American Sign Language (ASL) uses visual cues, such as the position, shape and movement of h hands, body and face, to form words. Students in MAC’s Sign Language/Interpreter Education major build their skills in a Sony Virtuoso-equipped ASL Lab – an elite resource and among the only lab of its kind in this part of the country.

  • Healthcare Professional
    MAC’s Nursing program has produced many of the state’s top RNs and the NCLEX pass rate of our graduates is unsurpassed. Our Surgical Technology program – ranked nationally in the top 10 and the only ranked Pennsylvania College – prepares students in a state-of-the-art operating room suite. The Medical Imaging program prepares radiographers and ultrasonographers with exceptional technical abilities and a caring approach to their work.

Nestled in the Alleghany Mountains

  • The Vox Nova Choral Ensemble, comprised of non-music majors, is renowned for its Baroque and Renaissance selections. Under the direction of Nancy Rosenteel Way, Vox Nova made a live recording at the invitation of Pittsburgh radio station WQED, which aired the performance.

  • Recreational opportunities include cross-country skiing, mountain biking, and intramural sports. On campus, a multi-day competition called the “Mini-Olympics” is a tradition that everyone is involved in, whether you are a seasoned athlete or a bookworm.

  • Our secure campus is in a safe community, with one of the lowest crime rates in the country.

  • Mount Aloysius students may love outdoor adventure, but Altoona, Johnstown, Pittsburgh, and Washington D.C. are all accessible from campus depending on how far you would like to drive. Altoona is only 15 minutes away while DC is 2 ½ hours away.

Mount Aloysius College (MAC) is a liberal arts and sciences based institution committed to career directed study.

Mission
The mission at Mount Aloysius College is to respond to individual and community needs with quality programs of education in the tradition of the Religious Sisters of Mercy. Each student will have the opportunity to be acquire knowledge and to develop values, attitudes, and competencies necessary for lifelong learning within an environment which reflects a liberal arts orientation and a Catholic, Judeo-Christian heritage.

Location
Mount Aloysius College’s 165 acre campus is located in the mountains of Cresson, Pennsylvania. The closest town is Altoona, which is ten miles away. The college is on a mountaintop adjacent to US Highway 22.

Student Profile
Approximately 2,500 students (unduplicated headcount); 1,300 full-time undergraduate students; 1,200 part-time undergraduate and graduate students; average class size is 18 students.

Faculty Profile
175 professors/faculty members-the majority hold the highest degree in their field. All classes are taught by professors, not graduate assistants.  Our student to faculty ratio is 14:1.

Residence Life
Approximately 40% of our students live on campus, and because of the removed location, it is very safe and secure. Apartment style housing is a recent addition to the campus.  MAC is an advancing residential college.

Athletics
The Mounties varsity sports teams compete in the NCAA Division III in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference. Our 13 athletic programs include women's basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, and volleyball, along with men's baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, soccer and tennis.

Activity/Club/Organization Types
Student clubs and organizations include a Student Government Association, academic clubs, a campus ministry, a student newspaper, and special interest clubs such as Sign Language.

How to Apply
For freshman applications, we need to receive:

  • Application for admission and $30 fee.
  • Official high school transcript or GED diploma.
  • SAT or ACT College Board scores if you have been out of school less than five years. (The ACT is offered monthly at Mount Aloysius College.)

International Students: Submit an SAT or ACT score and an official copy of your high school or college transcript(s). You must have a score of at least 500 on the TOEFL paper-based test and 173 on the computer-based test.

Financial Aid and Scholarship Opportunities
94% of our students receive financial aid and/or academic scholarships. More than 400 awards are given each fall. They range in size from $1,000 to $8,000 a year, and are renewable for up to four years. Mount Aloysius College does maximize its scholarship total at $10,000. We offer more than $2 million each year in scholarships and more than 50 endowed scholarships, including:
