Urbana University

Urbana University focuses on each student as a unique individual by providing student-centered teaching faculty who care about student success and preparing students for today’s economic climate with the skills needed - globally and across time zones

It’s All About U!

Located in historic Urbana, Ohio and voted one of Ohio’s “Best Hometowns” by Ohio Magazine, Urbana University (UU) is an extraordinary institution of higher education, evolving from a church-related college in 1850 into a modern, comprehensive university today.  At Urbana, students achieve lifelong learning through individual attention.

Founded by members of the Swedenborgian Church and laid, in part, by John Chapman (better known as “Johnny Appleseed”), Urbana was the second institution of higher education in Ohio to admit women and the first in the state to offer a nontraditional degree completion program. Unlike most other colleges and universities, the Urbana experience is one that nurtures educational excellence and individual expression and achievement while promoting core values of moral and ethical integrity to its students, alumni, and the communities they serve.

Engaged Students

Urbana University recognizes creative, free, open, and critical thinking as the core element of academic liberty and necessary for our students’ intellectual and professional development.  Whether it’s athletic training, business, education, or any of Urbana’s other programs of study, students will be prepared to exceed the high expectations of the professional world.

Overflow of Opportunities
Urbana students are focused on their studies, but they also get involved in athletics, clubs, honor societies, and a variety of other campus activities. Urbana students have opportunities to give back by helping families in need, assisting at public events, tutoring young children, and serving as peer mentors as U-Team leaders and resident assistants.  The volunteer spirit is an important part of the Urbana experience. Its part of what makes the warm, friendly atmosphere that sets Urbana apart from other colleges.

Jump In
Learning is not confined to the classroom! Urbana students travel abroad for research, service-learning, and study purposes. The span of people and cultures at Urbana allows for a broader dialogue and a better understanding of the global community – some of Urbana’s students come from as far as China.

Great Teaching

Urbana faculty members are experts in their field and passionate about teaching. They spark thought-provoking discussions and challenge students intellectually. Unlike some institutions, Urbana’s classes are taught exclusively by faculty – not teaching assistants or graduate students. Urbana faculty maintains on open-door policy by being accessible to students, whether with extended office hours, or by providing additional help in the Student Success Center. Each academic major prepares Urbana graduates for success in their chosen career or graduate school through a combination of classroom instruction, real world experiences, community partnerships, and technology. Plus, Urbana professors are part of the fabric of the campus community. They attend student events, eat in the dining hall, and mentor students.

The Honors College program provides an additional academic opportunity to students who meet the criteria.

A Support System
Resources like the Student Success Center provide free one-on-one tutoring and the Career Center’s highly qualified staff will connect students with employment and internship opportunities. The dedicated faculty provides students with individual attention that is key for growth.

Vibrant Community

Also, the University is within an hour of cities like Columbus and Dayton, with easy access to international airports, world-class cultural attractions, professional sports, retail stores, restaurants, and a regional bike trail.

The academic clubs, honor societies, and professional associations allow students to combine their interest with their majors. Successful Outcomes

Urbana students are challenged individually through education, while being recognized for their uniqueness through attention, empathy, and encouragement.  Because Urbana values the dignity and worth of the communities that make up the University, students in turn, appreciate the different people, cultures and ideas they bring.

Urbana graduates develop integrity through their personal and professional lives – they become committed to being fair, honest and trustworthy, and assume responsibility for their actions, both academic and social. By taking these institutional core values with them, Urbana graduates become solid citizens, dedicated learners, and talented individuals. Alumni have gone on to become successful business managers, attorneys, teachers, and more. Eighty-nine percent of graduates are employed or have continued their educations six months after graduation.
