Inclusive Leadership is the name of the game at Pine Manor College (PMC). Students Value Inclusiveness and Diversity
- With five hundred students, Pine Manor has a very diverse student body. At Pine Manor, students who have attended large, urban high schools; are first-generation college students; or who have different learning styles receive the same high-quality education as those who are fortunate enough to come from America’s best high schools.
- Pine Manor’s Center for Inclusive Leadership and Social Responsibility seeks to enhance the leadership skills of young women from middle school through the college years. The center is an active hub of activity for women of all ages and backgrounds, reaching out to the community while providing learning opportunities for Pine Manor students. Through the center, Pine Manor provides leadership workshops to high schools and offers a college outreach program that helps high school-age girls to understand the college experience.
- Pine Manor students wishing to study away from campus take part in programs affiliated with several study-abroad organizations, such as the Washington Seminar at American University, the American Institute for Foreign Study, and the University of Pittsburgh’s Semester at Sea program.
- All students are required to do an off-campus internship during their senior year, but students can also do internships during their junior and even sophomore years. Boasting one of the oldest internship programs in the country, the integration of practical, hands-on learning has been going on for a long time at Pine Manor. Often, these internships lead to post-graduation jobs at some of Boston’s best corporations, hospitals, museums, and social-service agencies.
- Some of the best learning occurs when students are engaged with one another in activities outside the classroom. At Pine Manor, there is an expectation to get involved; to participate in the inclusive leadership process; and to participate in community service, student organizations, athletics and physical recreation, and performing arts—all are considered a vital part of each student’s development. Pine Manor’s diversity and inclusive approach to learning creates wonderful and rare opportunities to engage with others. The international student adviser and the international student club seek to integrate Pine Manor’s many international students fully into the life of the college.

Students Learn Through Inclusive Leadership and Social Responsibility
Pine Manor offers over 50 areas of interest within ten majors. Majors include:

- Pine Manor offers ten major fields— Biology, Communication, Economic & Financial Systems, English, History, Management & Organizational Change, Psychology, Social and Political Systems, Visual Arts, as well as an option to design your own Major (options limited by courses and faculty expertise) - but more than sixty options within these majors give students a wide array of academic choices. Students in English, for example, may choose to concentrate on English education or on creative writing. Within the Social and Political Systems program, students may select national and international politics or criminal justice. One of the most popular programs at Pine Manor is Biology.
- Pine Manor’s approach to education is focused on the process of both learning and teaching. Students are encouraged to engage in the process—to challenge one another in discussions and to remain open to new perspectives. The low student to faculty ratio of ten to one helps foster this environment. On average, 75 percent of full-time faculty hold the PhD or the highest equivalent degree in their field, and 68 percent of full-time faculty are women. With 72 percent of Pine Manor’s classes having fewer than twenty students, the college ranks among the nation’s top forty liberal arts colleges in class size.

A Small Community in a Big City
- Pine Manor is one of a very small number of non-historically black colleges in the nation to have more black students than white students. Other substantial numbers of students identify themselves as Hispanic, Asian-American, Native American, Haitian, Puerto Rican, and Cape Verdean.
- Pine Manor’s comprehensive, four-credit, first-year seminar, co-taught by faculty and staff, serves as an excellent orientation to the college experience. The seminar uses topics and issues selected by students to focus on academic issues such as reading, writing, and research, as well as such personal issues as moving away from home, living with a roommate, and being part of an intensely diverse community.
- More than three-quarters of Pine Manor students live in residence halls on campus. Residence halls, each with thirty students, are grouped into three villages. Within each village, a first-year advisor, a resident assistant, and student-life staff members provide support.
- Pine Manor has worked hard to create an inclusive environment. In line with this focus, the college does not have a typical student government. Rather, students have a strong voice in the life of the college through individual efforts and through clubs and organizations. It is an organic way of involving all members of the community in decision making.
- Just a few miles from downtown Boston and a short walk to the T—Boston’s subway system—Pine Manor students enjoy all the amenities of one of the nation’s great cities. Yet, located on seventy wooded acres, the campus has the feel of a college far from urban noise and congestion.

- Most Pine Manor alumni remain in New England. They are successful in many different career paths, notably in the sciences and in criminal justice. Pine Manor’s office of experiential learning, internships, and career services helps students set career goals and offers more than one thousand internship opportunities, which often lead to students’ first jobs upon graduation.
- A few years ago, while the cost of college tuition was skyrocketing all across the country, one of Pine Manor’s alumni gave a generous donation and Pine Manor took the extraordinary step to reduce their tuition by 34 percent. Admissions Requirements for First-Year Students
Pine Manor accepts students on a rolling deadline basis.
Financial Aid
- Request an Admissions Application. This can be obtained on the Pine Manor Admissions website http://www.pmc.edu/admissions/firstyear/apply.html or by calling the Office of Admissions at 617-731-7104 or 1-800-PMC-1357.
- A completed application will include the application for admissions, along with a $25.00 enrollment fee, which is waived if the application is completed online. Applicants seeking a fee waiver for financial reasons should consult their high school counselor to complete a College Board fee waiver form.
- Complete a personal essay. See the admissions application for details.
- An official secondary school transcript submitted directly by your high school guidance office. The transcript should include updated grades received and courses in progress. If application is made prior to completion of mid-year senior courses, a supplementary transcript should be provided listing mid-year grades. Official results of the G.E.D. are also acceptable in lieu of the secondary school transcript.
- At least one letter of recommendation from a guidance counselor or teacher.
- Results of either the SAT I or the ACT. It is recommended that you take these examinations no later than February of your senior year.
- In addition, the Admissions Committee may require applicants to submit a supplementary report of senior grades, visit the campus and interview with a member of the Admissions staff, sit for placement testing, and/or provide additional materials that will attest to their readiness for college. Offers of admission are conditional upon successful completion of secondary school work. A final transcript indicating date of graduation is required of all entering students.

- Pine Manor College is committed to providing financial value to our students and their families. Several years ago, Pine Manor College actually reduced the tuition by 34%. We are now among the most affordable private four year colleges in the country. This commitment to value is made possible by the generous contributions of the alumnae and the friends to the College’s Fund for Affordable Education. This unique partnership helps keep costs at a reasonable level for students and families.
- The total projected resident costs for the 2010-11 year (estimated) for students is $34,854. This includes $21,400 tuition, $12,254 room and meals, $712.00 health insurance, $500 fees and deposits, $800.00 books, and $1,200 for estimated personal expenses. For commuters, the total is $21,400 with estimated living expenses being $5,000.
