Lewis University provides many opportunities for students to learn outside of the classroom setting. Our Study Abroad Programs allow students to travel the world to places like Dubai, Switzerland and China, immersing themselves in other cultures while enhancing the knowledge they have learned back home in the classroom.
Student researchers are able to share their findings with Lewis’ Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE). The eight-week SURE program was created to encourage and enhance the research opportunities for Lewis faculty and students. Students work directly with faculty mentors in their discipline on research projects. Lab and research work includes discipline-specific research team meetings and educational field trips.
Lewis students are active global citizens, travelling on mission trips throughout the world to countries such as Bolivia and the Philippines, and support their community by volunteering. The opportunity to give back begins before classes even start with Welcome Days “SOAR into Community”, where nearly 500 students go out into the community and work on various community service projects.
Lewis University students also have the support of the Office of Career Services that regularly runs internship and job fairs for Lewis students and alumni and assists in job and internship placement. Recent internships Lewis students have had include American Airlines, Argonne National Laboratory, the U.S. Department of Energy and LaSalle Bank.
In the spirit of St. John Baptist de La Salle, Lewis University is a Lasallian and Catholic University devoted to great teaching. The Doherty Center for Aviation and Health Research was established to promote scholarship and innovation at Lewis University in the fields of health and aviation and to create opportunities for mutually beneficial partnerships with business and industry.
The Center seeks to advance the formalization of research initiatives at Lewis University; encourage and support the research endeavors of faculty and students; create a place where scholars come together to pursue research that advances knowledge in the fields of aviation and health; and strengthen Lewis University’s relationships with practitioners in these fields.
Lewis University supports learning whenever and wherever possible! Our many seminars, lectures, organizations and programs allow students to be exposed to new ideas and unique experiences on a daily basis.
The annual Arts & Ideas series program at Lewis University features unique cultural, artistic and entertainment events on campus and has grown every year. The program currently has more than 100 events each semester. Faculty from nearly every department at the University participates in presenting programs.
The Common Reader Series at Lewis University engages first year students who will primarily be discussing and working with the text, which is chosen by faculty and staff to teach a life lesson, in their Introduction to the College Experience (ICE) courses. In addition, the English Department will also be using the text in College Writing courses. Our new first year students are introduced to the book over the summer in their Student Orientation, Advising and Registration (SOAR) sessions. In addition, students in Summer Bridge read and discussed the book as part of that program.
The annual “Si Se Puede” and “Fulfilling the Dream” conferences feature speakers who motivate students to overcome obstacles that they may face to reach their dreams. Workshops on financial aid, choosing a college and others, are offered to area high school students with Lewis University students actively involved in mentoring and assisting the students.
Our active 100 plus strong student organizations span many interests including cultural clubs like the Black Student Union and International Student Organization, Greek organizations and Academic and Honorary Clubs like Women in Aviation and Psi Chi Psychology Honors. Our nationally ranked Mock Trial team, award-winning student newspaper, The Flyer and groundbreaking student radio (WLRA) and television (LUTN) stations provide Lewis students ample opportunity to expand their knowledge, learn new skills and have fun!

Lewis University requires a core curriculum of general education requirements for all students, regardless of major, which is testament to our liberal learning foundation. As the largest undergraduate nursing program in Illinois, Lewis University’s College of Nursing and Health Professions boasts a nearly 100 percent pass rate on nursing licensure exams and 99.8 percent of Lewis’ more recent College of Education graduates passed the Illinois State Board of Education Teachers Certification Exam. The only university in Illinois to offer an air traffic control program, the Aviation Program at Lewis consistently boasts an above average pass rate on the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Maintenance Technician (AMT) Exam.
To support the academic success of Lewis students, the Leckrone Academic Resource Center (LARC) delivers quality programs and services that encourage independent lifelong learners, addresses the diverse needs of students and fosters a holistic learning environment. The Center helps students improve academic performance through advising, tutoring, and innovative academic programs.
LARC services are provided through the expertise of faculty, professional staff, career counselors, academic advisors, as well as graduate students and trained tutors and peer mentors – all who are committed to assisting students make the most of their college experience and be prepared for a successful career.
Lewis University was founded in 1932 under the direction of the Chicago Archdiocese and Bishop Bernard J. Sheil. It began as the Holy Name Technical School for boys. Aviation technology became the special emphasis of instruction and the origin of today’s highly regarded Department of Aviation and Transportation Studies. In 1960, the De La Salle Christian Brothers, a religious order devoted exclusively to teaching, assumed direction of the institution. Lewis University as it’s known today, was established in 1973.

Lewis University’s main, 376-acre campus is located in Romeoville, IL a suburb of Chicago approximately 30 minutes southwest of the city. Lewis has additional campus sites in Chicago, Hickory Hills, Oak Brook, Shorewood, and Tinley Park, IL. Lewis’ newest campus site is located in Albuquerque, NM.

Lewis University is a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II and the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC). Lewis is also a member of the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (men’s volleyball), the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletics Conference (men’s and women’s swimming) and the National Cheerleaders Association.

Lewis University for the seventh consecutive year has been recognized by the Princeton Review and U.S. News and World Report for its excellence and for the third consecutive year has designated as “Military Friendly” by G.I. Jobs Magazine. Lewis was also recognized by Peterson’s Cool Colleges 101 as a “cool college.” The ninth largest private university in Illinois, Lewis University has the largest undergraduate nursing program in the state and is the only school in Illinois to be selected by the FAA to offer a degree in Air Traffic Control.
Lewis University operates on a Rolling Admission process. Students are assured of hearing a decision on their admission status within two weeks of submitting a complete application. All students who apply for admission are also automatically considered for available academic and merit scholarships. This greatly simplifies and streamlines the process at Lewis so students can focus their efforts on determining if Lewis is the best fit for their college aspirations.
Our admission review process goes deeper than “just the numbers”. We look at the entire student background and take such factors into consideration as courses selected, trends in grades, leadership and community service. Demonstrated hard work, perseverance, effort and concern for others can in many cases be just as important as high grades and test scores. Early applicants also receive special consideration for housing and orientation. We strongly encourage interested students to apply as early as possible.
Lewis utilizes the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to award all state, federal and institutional financial aid dollars. Over 85 percent of the most recent freshman class received financial assistance to attend Lewis. We employ a three part strategy to help make a Lewis education affordable for qualified students:
